If you’ve been running a trade business or a small firm for any length of time, you know the drill: finding reliable staff is one of the toughest parts of the job. You want someone who is keen to learn, but taking on a new person often feels like a massive financial risk, especially if they need a bit of hand-holding at the start.
Well, as of 30 June 2026, the Government has put a bit of "fuel in the tank" for small businesses across Great Britain. The new Youth Jobs Grant has officially launched, and it’s offering a very tidy £3,000 grant for every eligible young person you hire.
At SBS Essex, we’re all about helping you keep your books clean and your business compliant, but we also want to see you grow. This grant isn't just a bit of extra cash; it’s a genuine opportunity to train up the next generation of your workforce while the Government picks up a significant chunk of the tab.
Let’s break down exactly what this means for you and how you can get your hands on it.
What is the Youth Jobs Grant?
The Youth Jobs Grant is a central part of a new £2.5 billion youth employment package. The goal is simple: get 18-to-24-year-olds who have been struggling to find work into stable, long-term roles.
For you, the employer, it’s a wage subsidy. It’s designed to offset the costs of recruitment and the initial "settling in" period where a new hire might not be fully productive yet. There are 60,000 of these grants available, and the scheme is set to run for three years, closing in October 2028.

How the £3,000 Payment Works
One of the best things about this grant is that it isn’t a "wait a year and hope for the best" kind of deal. The money is paid out in two clear stages once the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) verifies the earnings via HMRC:
- The First Instalment (£1,800): This is paid after the new hire has been with you for 6 weeks.
- The Second Instalment (£1,200): This is paid after they have completed 18 weeks of continuous employment.
This structure is brilliant for SMEs because it gives you a significant cash injection right at the start when you’re spending time and money on training and kit.
Who Can You Hire?
To qualify for the £3,000, the person you hire needs to meet a few specific criteria:
- They must be aged between 18 and 24 at the time of hiring.
- They must be currently claiming Universal Credit.
- They must have been actively seeking work for at least 6 months.
The beauty of this is that Jobcentre Plus does the heavy lifting for you. They identify the eligible young people and refer them to your vacancies. It takes the guesswork out of whether a candidate qualifies for the grant or not.
Why This is a "No-Brainer" for SMEs Like Yours
I speak to small business owners all the time, and the story is often the same: "I need another pair of hands, but I don't have the time or the spare cash to risk on someone who might not work out."
Think of the Youth Jobs Grant as the Government paying you to mentor. If you can take an 18-year-old, show them the ropes, and get them through those first four months with £3,000 of support, you aren't just filling a vacancy: you're investing in someone who could become a reliable, long-term part of your team.
By the time the full grant is paid out at 18 weeks, that "new kid" should be a productive, valuable member of your team. Plus, the grant is open to all employer sizes, including sole traders. If you’ve been thinking about taking on your first employee, this might be the perfect nudge.

The "Fine Print" (The Easy Version)
As with everything involving HMRC and the DWP, there are some ground rules. But don't worry, they are pretty straightforward:
- Hours: The role must be for a minimum of 25 hours per week.
- Duration: You must expect the role to last for at least 4 months.
- Wages: You must pay at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group.
- Location: The scheme covers businesses in Great Britain.
How SBS Essex Can Help You Manage the Growth
Taking on a new staff member is exciting, but I know the paperwork can feel like a headache. Between CIS management, payroll tax, and pension auto-enrolment, there’s a lot to keep track of.
That’s where we come in. If you decide to take advantage of the Youth Jobs Grant, SBS Essex can handle the payroll management and admin side of things for you.
We work with all the major software: Xero, Sage, and FreeAgent: to ensure your new hire is paid correctly and on time, and that all your submissions to HMRC are spot on. This is especially vital for the grant, as the DWP uses that real-time payroll data to trigger your £1,800 and £1,200 payments. If your payroll isn't right, your grant might be delayed!
Whether you need help with clean bookkeeping or a virtual assistant to handle the initial recruitment admin, we’ve got your back.

Ready to Grow Your Team?
The Youth Jobs Grant is a fantastic leg-up for any small business looking to expand. With 60,000 grants up for grabs, my advice is to move sooner rather than later.
Getting your finances and payroll systems in order is the first step to making any new hire a success. If you’re not sure if your current setup: be it Xero, Sage, or FreeAgent: is ready for a new employee, or if you want to chat about how to handle the CIS side of a new hire, give us a shout.
We offer a free 1-hour discovery consultation where we can look at your current processes and see how we can make your life easier.
Hiring doesn't have to be a headache. Let’s get those next-gen workers trained up and get your business moving!
