65 Years of Excellence: Celebrating Our Friends at Murco (Electrical) Ltd

There is something truly special about a business that stands the test of time. In an era where companies seem to come and go with the changing seasons, reaching a decade is an achievement. Reaching twenty-five years is a triumph. But reaching sixty-five years? That is nothing short of legendary.

This year, all of us here at SBS Essex Ltd are raising a glass (and perhaps a celebratory biscuit or two) to one of our longest-standing clients and dear friends: Murco (Electrical) Ltd.

Based right here in Brentwood, Murco is celebrating its 65th business anniversary in 2026. To put that into perspective, when Murco was first incorporated back on 25th July 1961, the world was a very different place. For those of us in the trade, 1961 represents a time of grit, manual tools, and a "handshake" culture that built the foundations of the Essex we know today.

A Legacy Built on Brentwood Soil

Murco (Electrical) Ltd isn't just any electrical firm; they are a cornerstone of the Brentwood business community. As a family-owned and operated business, they carry a set of values that you simply don’t find in the big national corporations. There’s a level of care, a sense of responsibility to the local area, and a deep-rooted pride in the work they do.

For builders and tradespeople across Essex, Murco has been a familiar name on site for generations. Whether it’s residential installations, commercial contracts, or those tricky maintenance jobs that require a seasoned eye, they’ve seen it all. They’ve wired the homes we live in and the businesses we frequent, all while operating from their base in Kelvedon Hatch.

Being a family business means that the reputation of the company is the same as the reputation of the family. That’s why 65 years is such a massive milestone. You don’t survive six decades in the electrical trade unless your work is top-tier and your word is your bond.

20 Years of Working Side-by-Side

On a personal note, this anniversary feels particularly special to me. I have had the absolute pleasure of working alongside Murco for over 20 years now.

When I look back at the last two decades of providing bookkeeping and financial support to the team, I don't just see spreadsheets and tax returns: I see a partnership that has grown and evolved. I’ve seen the challenges they’ve navigated, the growth they’ve managed, and the unwavering commitment they have to their staff and their customers.

In my line of work, you get a "under the hood" look at how a business really functions. I can tell you first-hand that Murco’s longevity isn’t an accident. It’s the result of meticulous planning, honest dealings, and a refusal to cut corners. Working with them for 20 years has been a highlight of my career at SBS Essex. It’s rare to find such a perfect alignment of values, and I’m incredibly proud to be the one helping them keep their "financial house" in order while they keep the lights on for the rest of Brentwood.

Why Longevity Matters in the Trades

For the builders and subcontractors reading this, you know as well as I do that reliability is everything. When you’re managing a site, the last thing you need is a subbie who might not be around in six months’ time.

Choosing a partner like Murco, who has been active since 1961, provides a level of security that is priceless.

  1. Experience that spans generations: They’ve seen the evolution of electrical regulations from the 14th edition right through to the present day. There isn’t a wiring snag or a site complication they haven’t tackled before.
  2. Financial Stability: Our research shows they are an active, healthy company with a consistent track record. For a builder, this means you aren't worried about whether your electrical contractor will be there to finish the second fix.
  3. Local Knowledge: Being based in Brentwood for 65 years means they know the local landscape, the local suppliers, and the local people.

The Secret Sauce of Family-Owned Businesses

What is it about family businesses that allows them to outlast the giants? At SBS Essex, we work with a lot of tradespeople, and the ones that really thrive often have that family-first mentality.

In a family business, the "boss" isn't some nameless shareholder in an office block in London. The boss is someone who is on the ground, who knows their employees' names, and who cares about the legacy they are leaving for their children. This creates a culture of loyalty. When employees feel like part of the family, they go the extra mile. When customers feel like they are being looked after by a local family, they keep coming back.

Murco (Electrical) Ltd is the perfect example of this. They’ve navigated the ups and downs of the UK economy, from the swinging sixties to the digital age, without losing that personal touch.

Lessons We Can All Learn

As we celebrate Murco's 65th year, it’s worth asking: What can we learn from them? Whether you’re a solo sparky just starting out or a medium-sized building firm, there are a few "Murco Lessons" that apply to us all:

  • Consistency is King: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every year. Do good work, show up on time, and treat people fairly. Do that for 65 years, and you’ll be a local legend too.
  • Adapt or Die: While their values remain old-school, their techniques certainly aren't. Staying active for over six decades means embracing new technology, new safety standards, and new ways of working.
  • Keep Your Books Balanced: (You knew I’d get this one in there!) A business can only last 65 years if its finances are healthy. Having a solid grasp of your cash flow, your tax obligations, and your long-term financial health is the fuel that keeps the engine running.

Supporting Local, Celebrating Excellence

At SBS Essex, our mission has always been to support the local businesses that make our community great. Brentwood is a fantastic place to do business, and it’s because of companies like Murco (Electrical) Ltd.

They are more than just a client to us; they are a testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve. When I think back to 20 years ago when we first started working together, I’m struck by how much has changed: but also by how much has stayed the same. The faces might have a few more "character lines," and the vans might be a lot more modern, but that Murco spirit is exactly as strong as it was in 1961.

A Final Toast to the Future

So, to the whole team at Murco (Electrical) Ltd: Congratulations on 65 years of excellence!

Thank you for being such a vital part of the Brentwood community. Thank you for being a dream to work with for the last two decades. And most importantly, thank you for showing us all how it’s done.

If you see the Murco vans out and about in Brentwood or surrounding areas this month, give them a wave. It’s not every day you see a local business hitting such a monumental milestone.

Here’s to the next 65 years! We’ll be right here with you, making sure the books are as balanced as your circuits.

Happy Anniversary, Murco!
