There is a very specific feeling that comes with handing in a resignation letter for a steady PAYE job. It’s a cocktail of pure adrenaline, a dash of "what on earth am I doing?", and a huge, refreshing splash of "it’s about time."
If you’ve been following the SBS Essex journey for a while, you’ll know that this business has been my passion project, my evening obsession, and my weekend hustle for some time. But as of now, the training wheels are off, the safety net of the 9-to-5 has been folded away, and I am officially, 100%, head-over-heels committed to SBS Essex Ltd as a full-time practice owner.
So, why the big move? And more importantly, what does my career pivot mean for you and your business? (Spoiler alert: it’s all good news).
The 20-Year Itch (and 20 Years of Experience)
I didn’t just wake up yesterday and decide that spreadsheets were my true calling. I’ve been in the world of finance for over 20 years. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the "why is there a kebab receipt in your shoe box of accounts?" side of bookkeeping.
For the last few years, I’ve been balancing a full-time PAYE role with running SBS Essex. It meant early mornings, late nights, and a lot of caffeine. While I loved the security of the day job, I found myself constantly thinking about my own clients: the builders, the sparkies, the small business owners who were trying to grow their dreams while drowning in paperwork.
I realised that to give my clients the level of service they truly deserve, I needed to stop splitting my focus. You can’t offer a "personal touch" if you’re only checking your emails once the dogs have been walked and you’re finally ready to focus fully on the business. By transitioning to a full-time practice owner, I’m putting my 20 years of experience front and centre. I’m no longer "Claire who does bookkeeping on the side." I’m Claire, your AAT Licenced Bookkeeping Practitioner, and I’m here from Monday morning through to Friday afternoon (and maybe the occasional Saturday if a crisis hits!).

Why I’m Trading the Paycheque for the Practice
Transitioning from employee to employer is a leap of faith, but for me, it was a logical step. The demand for high-quality outsourced bookkeeping UK services is through the roof. Small businesses are increasingly realising that they don’t need a full-time staff member sitting in an office to manage their books; they need a specialist who knows the industry, understands the HMRC rules, and: most importantly: has the time to actually pick up the phone.
By dedicating 100% of my time to SBS Essex, I can now offer:
- Faster Turnarounds: No more waiting until the weekend for your VAT return to be processed.
- Proactive Support: I can spot issues before they become "tax-man-knocking-on-the-door" problems.
- Tailored Advice: Every business is different. Whether you’re a sole trader or a growing limited company, I now have the headspace to dive deep into your specific requirements.
The Specialist in "Small Business Bookkeeping Rescue"
Let’s be honest: bookkeeping is usually the first thing that falls off the to-do list when you’re busy on-site or running from meeting to meeting. I’ve seen some "books" that looked more like a crime scene than a financial record.
One of my favourite parts of this job is what I call small business bookkeeping rescue. This is for the owner who hasn’t looked at their Xero or QuickBooks in six months, who has a pile of invoices gathering dust on the dashboard of the van, and who gets a cold sweat every time they think about their year-end.
Now that I’m full-time, I have the capacity for crisis recovery bookkeeping. If your accounts are a mess, don't be embarrassed. I’ve seen it all before. I have the time and the focus to sit down, untangle the knots, reconcile the accounts, and get you back on the straight and narrow. There is nothing more satisfying to me than taking a business from "financial chaos" to "crystal clear," and now I can do it without the time pressure of a 9-to-5 hanging over me.

More Than Just a Number Cruncher
People often ask why I’m so passionate about bookkeeping services for small business. It’s because I know that for a small business owner, the "books" represent their life’s work. It’s the mortgage, the family holiday, and the future.
When you hire a big, faceless accounting firm, you’re often just a client number. When you work with SBS Essex, you’re working with me. I’m the one who answers the phone. I’m the one who remembers that you’re saving up for a new van or that you’re worried about the rising cost of materials.
That personal touch is what sets a boutique practice apart. I’m not just categorising transactions; I’m helping you understand your cash flow. I’m making sure you’re claiming every penny of allowable expenses. I’m being the financial wingwoman you didn't know you needed.
The Peace of Mind of an AAT Licenced Bookkeeping Practitioner
I take my profession seriously. Being an AAT Licenced Bookkeeping Practitioner means I’m held to high standards of professional conduct, continuing professional development, and ethical practice. It means I’m fully insured and regulated.
For you, it means peace of mind. You aren't handing your sensitive financial data to someone who "quite likes numbers"; you’re handing it to a qualified professional with two decades of experience. Now that SBS Essex is my full-time focus, I’m investing even more into my professional growth, staying on top of every legislative change and new piece of accounting software that can make your life easier.

"I've Got Time to Manage Your Workload"
This is the big takeaway: I am officially open for new business.
If you’ve been thinking about outsourcing your bookkeeping but were worried I was too busy, or if you’ve been putting off that "rescue" job because you thought it would take too long: now is the time to reach out.
My desk is clear, my systems are streamlined, and I am ready to take on your workload. Whether you need ongoing weekly support, monthly VAT management, or a one-off "clean up" of your accounts, I’ve got the capacity to handle it.
I know the construction industry and the trades inside out. I know the stresses of the CIS (Construction Industry Scheme), the pain of chasing late payments from contractors, and the importance of having your figures ready for the bank. I speak your language, and I’ve got the time to listen.
What Happens Next?
I’m not going anywhere. SBS Essex is here for the long haul. My goal is to build the go-to bookkeeping practice for small businesses in Essex and beyond: a place where professionalism meets a friendly, casual vibe. I want you to feel like you can ask me any question, no matter how "stupid" you think it is (trust me, there are no stupid questions in bookkeeping, only expensive ones if you don't ask!).
So, if you’re a business owner who is currently:
- Staying up until 11 PM trying to figure out why your bank balance doesn't match your software.
- Worried that you’re paying too much tax (or not enough!).
- Desperately needing a crisis recovery bookkeeping expert to save you from a mountain of receipts.
- Looking for a reliable partner for outsourced bookkeeping UK.
Then let’s have a chat. No pressure, no jargon, just a friendly conversation about how I can take the weight of the finances off your shoulders so you can get back to what you do best.

Let’s Do This Together
The leap from PAYE to full-time business owner is the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s allowed me to align my work with my values: providing dedicated, high-quality, and personal support to the backbone of our economy: the small business owner.
I’m excited, I’m focused, and I’m ready to work. SBS Essex is no longer a side project: it is my everything. And I can’t wait to show you what that level of dedication can do for your business.
